ACNH Guide: How to make a shovel in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

If you want to be successful in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you need the right equipment. A shovel is one of the essential tools you will need with your bulbous little hands. Before you can start exploring your island like Mr. Resty, there are a few stages you'll need to complete, though that might seem like an easy chore in an Animal Crossing game. A tutorial on purchasing your own shovel in New Horizons is available here.

What to do before making a flimsy shovel

Bring everyone's favorite museum curator, Blathers, to your island before you get to the shovel. After you've completed the instruction and DIY workshops, Tom Nook will want you to bring him any bugs or fish you find on your expedition. Simply provide Nook with five different fish or bugs, and he'll welcome Blathers to set up shop.

When Blathers shows up, introduce yourself to him and he should give you two DIY instructions for the jump pole and of course the flimsy shovel. As the name suggests, the fragile shovel has the lowest durability of all the shovels in the game, but don't worry - you can upgrade it very quickly. More on that later.

Make a fragile shovel

Fortunately, making your Flimsy Shovel is simple because you only need one component to complete the process. Once you have five pieces of hardwood (the darkest of the three types of wood you may obtain), all you need to do is walk around hacking at trees with your axe. Congratulations, you now possess a shovel. Naturally, the drawback is that your shovel is quite flimsy; it will only hold up for 40 uses before breaking. The good news is that, if necessary, you can always create more .

You also have the choice to just purchase Flimsy Shovels from Timmy and Tommy for 800  ACNH Bells  once you unlock Nook's Cranny, the general store on your island.

Upgrading your equipment

Once you learn how to make the Flimsy versions, upgrading your gear isn't too tough, but you'll need to take care of this first. Access the Nook Stop kiosk at Resident Services to buy the Pretty-Good Tools pack for 3,000  Nook Miles Tickets . You can get the recipes for all the improved tools by downloading the pack directly to your in-game phone.

Now all you need to create your upgraded shovel is a flimsy shovel and an iron nugget, which you may obtain by using your shovel or axe to strike rocks. The tool's endurance has increased to 100 uses, which is more than twice as long as the Flimsy Shovel's. You can also buy enhanced versions of the Shovel, such as Outdoorsy, Colorful, and Printed variants, once Nook's Cranny has been updated enough times.

About Golden Shovel

The desired Golden Shovel is the last development of the shovel available in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. While the golden versions of tools were considerably more uncommon in earlier AC games, as long as you have the necessary components, you can build as many of them as you'd want in New Horizons. Finding Gulliver, the pelican figure who occasionally passes out on the beach, and completing all 30 of his mini-quests by assisting him in locating the pieces of his broken communicator, will net you the DIY recipe for the Golden Shovel. Gulliver will write you a letter with the DIY recipe for the Golden Shovel after you assist him. Ta da!

You need a standard shovel (which you should be able to grab easily at this point) and a gold nugget to craft a golden shovel. You'll need some perseverance to find the gold nuggets, as they're a rare drop that only have a 1% chance of appearing when you hit a rock with a shovel or axe. The gold shovel is twice as durable as the improved shovel and can be used 200 times, which is very worthwhile. Not bad for a gold-encrusted shovel.
