Roger Goodell is not expected to technically fine Jerry Jones for “conduct detrimental to the league”

SportsPulse: Don't call it a fine. But Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones will likely have to pay a pretty penny as the Roger Goodell and the NFL are seeking him to pay millions in legal fees stemming from two high-profiles clashes with league.

Roger Goodell is not expected to technically fine Jerry Jones for “conduct detrimental to the league,” but the Dallas Cowboys owner will indeed be on the hook for “millions” of dollars, stemming from his rift last year with the NFL Commissioner, a person with knowledge of the situation told.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because of the nature of the sensitive and incomplete state of the proceedings.

Jones, the person said, will be ordered to repay legal costs incurred by other NFL owners for two high-profile clashes with the league.

He first clashed with the Goodell on Ezekiel Elliott's six-game suspension for violation of the NFL’s personal conduct policy amid domestic violence allegations. The Cowboys running back appealed to three courts before the ban was ultimately upheld.

Jones also threatened to sue other owners while contesting negotiations for the five-year extension of Goodell’s contract that was ultimately approved by owners.

"This is not about replacing Roger," Jones told USA TODAY Sports. "It’s a misnomer to say it’s payback for Ezekiel Elliott. It is about the accountability of the commissioner to all of the ownership."

The New York Times first reported the expected action against Jones for restitution of the legal fees, but the person indicated that there’s no definitive fine for detrimental conduct coming from Goodell – which could have been viewed as revenge for Jones’ outspoken discontent with the Commissioner’s contract and his decision to suspend Dallas’ star player.

The repayment of legal fees is covered by a resolution dating back roughly 20 years, and other NFL owners in other cases have similarly been ordered to provide restitution in battling the league.

Still, while Jones may not be getting “fined,” that could merely be semantics – especially considering that he will apparently be ordered to pay restitution for a case that was pursued with legal fees paid for by the NFL Players Association, not himself.
