2 Years of Elden Ring: Fond Memories and Lasting Impact

It has now been two years since FromSoftware released their magnum opus, Elden Ring, to widespread critical acclaim. This massive open world action RPG represented both the pinnacle of the Soulsborne formula that put the studio on the map, as well as a bold evolution that helped the title achieve mainstream popularity. While Elden Ring was lauded for its intricate world design, deep lore, and sense of exploration, it also cemented its reputation for being a very challenging experience. Even the most seasoned of players still debate which areas and bosses presented the steepest obstacles.

As fans of the franchise know well, overcoming adversity and emerging victorious through perseverance and skill is all part of the appeal. Now, with some distance from that fateful February 2022 launch, it seems fitting to revisit some of Elden Ring's most notorious locales and lethal enemies. Journeying back to reflect on where players first felt true terror can be an enjoyable stroll down memory lane.

Margit the Fell Omen was an early hurdle that gave many newcomers a rude awakening. Perched ominously outside Stormveil Castle, this stern sentinel smashed hopes of a gentle introduction to the Lands Between. Multiple attempts were required by most to learn his aggressive combos and precise timings. But overcoming Margit brought a real sense of achievement, and prepared one for the challenges ahead.

Stormveil Castle itself offered a true test of 3D platforming and combat prowess. Navigating its vertical levels while fending off roaming enemies and ambushes required constant vigilance. Fighting through its cramped quarters to reach Godrick the Grafted involved careful use of the environment too. No doubt this was a harrowing initiation for many into the full Elden Ring experience.

The Mountaintops of the Giants lived up to their foreboding name. Braving howling blizzards, spinning blades and bottomless chasms of mist was stressful enough. But facing off against the twin gargoyles or the fiery Guardian Ape was enough to make one long for warmer lands. These were some of the toughest and most mechanically complex bosses in the game.

Of course, no discussion of Elden Ring's most difficult areas would be complete without mentioning the Haligtree and Malenia. This stunning but stressful location tests one's mastery of platforming, enemies and environmental hazards. And Malenia's Waterfowl Dance attack has broken many a Tarnished, causing her to become infamous as perhaps the toughest boss from a skills and execution perspective.

While some may look back on these trials with fondness or frustration, returning to them now with experience can be a test of how far one has come since those early days. Elden Ring's legacy as a modern FromSoftware classic is assured. But its reputation as one of gaming's most demanding and rewarding experiences endures too. Perhaps in another two years, new players will be cursing these same memorable areas and bosses as we once did. The cycle continues
